Mammutwerk europäischer Baukunst, Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO: Wo sich seit spätromanischer Zeit die ersten Christen in Köln versammelten,
stand zunächst ein karolingischer Dom. Auf diesem Platz begann man 1248 mit dem Bau einer noch größeren Kirche nach dem Vorbild der Kirche
von Amiens, denn durch die Reliquien der Heiligen drei Könige war der Kölner Dom auch Wallfahrtsort geworden und musste dem architektonisch
Rechnung tragen. Dreihundert Jahre lang wurde gebaut und reich ausgestattet, bis man aus Geldmangel und Desinteresse die Bauarbeiten einstellte.
1842 wurde der Bau wieder aufgenommen – auf Betreiben und mit der Finanzierung Kölner Bürger und mit Geldern aus der preußischen Staatskasse,
sodass der Dombau 1880 dank modernster Bautechnik vollendet werden konnte. Der Dom bestimmt die Silhouette der Stadt am Rhein und ist Herz der Stadt.

Ein mittelalterliches Wasserschloss wird im 17. Jahrhundert barock aufgewertet. 1740 wird es Zeuge einer einzigartigen historischen
Begegnung: Der preußische König Friedrich der Große und der französische Philosoph Voltaire treffen sich zum ersten Mal auf diesem
Schloss – so weit entfernt von Preußen und wegweisend für die politische Kultur im Land. Von 1766 bis 1945 war das Schloss ständiger Sitz
der Familie von Steengracht, ab 1854 wurde es im neugotischen Stil vom Kölner Dombaumeister Ernst Friedrich Zwirner gestaltet. Von 1987 an
wurde das unterdessen verfallene Schloss zehn Jahre lang restauriert, um dann seinem heutigen Zweck zugeführt zu werden: Es beheimatet die
Sammlung der Gebrüder van der Grinten, eine umfangreiche und vielseitige Sammlung von Kunst aus dem 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. Zeichnung,
Malerei, Plastik, Grafik und Fotografie erhalten hier einen angemessenen Kunst-Raum. Besonderer Schwerpunkt der Sammler war das Werk
Joseph Beuys, und so ist hier auch das Joseph Beuys Archiv des Landes NRW beheimatet. Eine Museumsbibliothek bietet umfangreiche Medien
zur zeitgenössischen Kunst.Das Außengelände des Schlosses gibt Einblicke in Gartengeschichte, der Skulpturenpark lässt die Kunst der Natur

Die wohl ungewöhnlichste Pyramide im Ruhrgebiet, der Tetraeder, steht auf dem Gelände der ehemaligen Zeche Prosper in Bottrop. 50 Meter
hoch ist die Stahlkonstruktion in Pyramidenform: Der Tetraeder thront auf einer 60 Meter hohen Halde und ist damit weithin sichtbar als
eine Landmarke Bottrops. Bei Nacht wird er beleuchtet und wirkt reizvoll, fast schwebend. Die Konstruktion ist atemraubend, und mutige
Besucher trauen sich sogar auf die obere, schräg eingehängte Plattform, von der aus man das Panorama genießen kann.

Essen-Bredeney: Als Eigenheim mit 260 Zimmern wurde sie oberhalb des Baldeneysees gebaut. In der Villa Hügel residierte die
Industriellenfamilie Krupp sieben Jahrzehnte lang und nutzte sie zur Repräsentation. Zusammen mit dem prächtigen Hügelpark steht
die Villa Hügel seit Ende des zweiten Weltkriegs der Allgemeinheit offen. Seit 1953 finden hier regelmäßig bedeutende Kunstausstellungen

Colonia Ulpia Traiana – hier am Niederrhein gründeten die Römer eine Kolonie, wo zuvor ein Militärlager stand: strategisch günstig
am Rhein gelegen, mit einer Bevölkerung von 10-15.000 Menschen nach Köln die zweitgrößte römische Stadt in Germanien. Xanten gehörte
noch bis ins späte Mittelalter zu den bedeutendsten Städten Deutschlands, die Verlagerung des Rheins jedoch ließ die Stadt in die
Bedeutungslosigkeit versinken. Seit 1977 kann man im archäologischen Park Xanten die Reste der Römerstadt besichtigen, restaurierte
und rekonstruierte Architektur lässt römisches Leben nachvollziehen.Xanten bietet Wassersportlern große Vielfalt: An den zwei mit einem
Kanal verbundenen Seen, Xantener Nord- und Südsee genannt, können Wakeboarder, Wasserskifahrer, Taucher, Segler ihren Sport in
vollen Zügen genießen.

Sie gilt als die „schönste Zeche der Welt“ und zählt zu den bedeutendsten Schöpfungen der Industriearchitektur. 2001 wurde sie zusammen
mit der benachbarten Kokerei von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe ernannt: Die in den 30er Jahren errichtete Zeche Zollverein, im Bauhaus-Stil
entworfen und realisiert, förderte zu Höchstzeiten bis zu 10.000 Tonnen Kohle. Nach ihrer Schließung vor 20 Jahren siedelten sich hier
zahlreiche Kulturinstitutionen an. Künstler-Ateliers, Ausstellungsräume, das „red dot design museum“, das Choreographische Zentrum NRW:

Der Zoo Duisburg lockt jährlich über eine Million Besucher an den Kaiserberg. Hier trainieren alle zwei Stunden die Delfine und lassen

Vom 16. bis zum 21. August 2005 findet der von Papst Johannes Paul II. initiierte XX. Weltjugendtag in Köln statt. Neben dem christlichen Rahmenprogramm, das sein Zentrum von Düsseldorf den Rhein hinunter bis nach Bonn hat, gibt es für die Jugend dieser Welt Konzerte und Festivals, bei denen man nicht nur miteinander feiern, sondern sich ebenso begegnen kann. Unter dem Titel "Under Construction - Bau mit einer gerechten Welt" sollen sich am Freitag die Teilnehmer in verschiedenen Sozialprojekten engagieren. Wer hier mitmacht, sollte den Morgen am internationalen Frühstückstisch in den Feldern zwischen Mündelheim und Serm beginnen und sich für die Anstrengungen des Tages stärken. Den Abschluss dieses Tages bildet dann ein Abend der Begegnung, bei dem die Jugendlichen aus aller Welt im Innenhafen Duisburger treffen und den Klängen von Do not feed, Remedy und Trustgame lauschen. Für weitere Unterhaltung sorgen Kai Magnus Sting und Zauberer Chris.
Der Samstag steht dann ganz unter dem Motto "KULTour": Der Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord (LaPaNo) wird zum Zentrum der jungen und junggebliebenen Christen, denen neben der Attraktion des LaPaNo noch ein musikalisches und künstlerisches Programm angeboten wird. Zusätzlich besteht die Möglichkeit an einer Stadtführung rund um den Innenhafen teilzunehmen. Abends muss man sich entscheiden, ob man am Pfadfinder Sommerfest "Meet the World" in der katholischen Kirchengemeinde St. Franziskus, Duisburg-Großenbaum mit Duisburger Bands teilnehmen möchte oder aber internationale Musik à la "Tatort live" in der St. Hubertus-Gemeinde genießt. Wenn am Sonntag die Glocken zum Gottesdienst in Duisburgs katholischen Gemeinden erklingen, wird nicht nur das Ende des diesjährigen Weltjugendtags eingeläutet, sondern es heißt auch Abschied nehmen für die Gäste, mit denen zusammen die Duisburger wenige Tage lang eine Welt geteilt haben.

Mammoth work of European engineering, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site- where the first Christians gathered in Cologne in the Late Roman
Period was, first of all, a Carolingian cathedral. Due the Requiem of the Three Wise Men, the Kölner Dom also became a place of pilgrimage and,
needing to be architecturally fitting, the construction of an even larger church was begun following the model of the Church of Amiens in 1248.
It was built three hundred years long and was richly outfitted until the construction was stopped as a result of a shortage of funds and
disinterest. The construction began again in 1842 due to the initiative of and financing by the citizens of Cologne and with funds from the
Prussian state coffers. Thanks to modern engineering, the construction of the Dom was completed in 1880.The Dom defines the silhouette of
the city on the Rhine and is the heart of the city.

The status of the moat castle was enhanced to a baroque style in the 17th century. In 1740 it was witness to a unique historical
meeting; the Prussian King Frederick the Great and the French philosopher Voltaire met for the first time in this castle though it was so
far from Prussia and the leading political culture of the country. From 1766 to 1945, the castle was the permanent residence of the Von
Steengracht family. From 1854 it was renovated in the New Gothic style of the master builder of Cologne Cathedral, Ernst Friedrich Zwirner.
Beginning in 1987, the crumbling castle was restored 10 years long bringing its to its present state. It is now the home of the Collection of
the Brothers Van der Grinten- a comprehensive and diverse collection of art dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. Drawings, paintings,
sculptures, graphics and photography have found a worthy artistic space. The main focus of the collector was the work of Joseph Beuys, and
so here is also the home of the Archives of Joseph Beuys of the State of NRW. The museum library provides comprehensive media concerning
contemporary art.The grounds outside the castle offer a look into gardening history. The Park of Sculptures is a meeting of art with nature.
And a former herbal garden completes the entire art-nature-history experience.

Possibly the most unusual pyramid in the Ruhr Region, the Tetraeder, is on the grounds of the former coal-mine “Prosper” in Bottrop.
The pyramid-shaped steel construction in is 50 metres high. The Tetraeder crowns a 60-metre hill and so, is a clearly visible Bottrop
landmark. It is lit in the evening and has a charming, if not floating, effect. The construction is breath-taking and some brave visitors
have trusted themselves to climb to the upper platform, which has been slantingly hung, from which to enjoy the panoramic view.

Essen-Bredeney: It was built above Baldeney Lake as a private home with 260 rooms. The Krupp industrial family resided here for seven
decades and was a symbol of prestige. Since the end of the Second World War, the Villa Hügel and the adjoining Hügel Park have been open
to the public. Important artwork exhibitions and concerts have been taking place regularly here since 1952. A permanent exhibition in the
Villa Guesthouse informs visitors about the history of the family and the Krupp Corporation.

Colonia Ulpia Traiana – the Romans founded a colony here on the Lower Rhine, where once a military base was. Strategically placed on
the Rhine and with a population of 10 to 15,000 people, it was the second largest city next to Cologne in Germania. Up until the Middle
Ages, Xanten was one of the most important German cities. But the wandering of the Rhine Rinver sunk the city into insignificance.
Since 1977, one can tour the ruins of the archaeological Park Xanten. One can experience Roman life with rebuilt and reconstructed
architecture.Xanten offers aquatic athletes much diversity- wake boarders, water-skiers, divers, and sailors can enjoy their sport at
the fullest on the two lakes, Xantener North and South Lakes, which are connected by a canal.

It is recognised as "the most beautiful coal mine in the world" and counts as one of the most important creations in industrial
architecture. UNESCO appointed it, together with the neighbouring coking plant, a World Heritage Site. Constructed in the 30s, drafted
and produced in the Bauhaus style, the Coal-Mining Customs Union extracted up to 10 000 tonnes of coal during its peak period. Following
its closure 20 years ago, many cultural institutions have settled here. Artists' studios, exhibition rooms, and the "red dot design museum“,
the Choreography Centre NRW: they have all found worthy spaces here and offer high-ranking and diverse cultural programmes.

The Duisburg Zoo attracts over one million visitors annually to the Kaiserberg. The dolphins train here every two hours and can be
observed- a huge attraction not only for kids. The Petting Zoo allows kids to get up close to the animals. Exotic species such as giraffes,
elephants, and monkeys can be observed here as well as the more rare koalas, which the Duisburg Zoo itself even breeds. A Chinese Garden
wafts a touch of East Asia. It is not surprising that the Duisburg Zoo has taken first place in popularity among the zoos in North-Rhine
Westphalia. The Tourist Information provides information about the Zoo as an attraction for young and old alike.

The XX World Youth Day, initiated by Pope John Paul II, takes place from the 16th to the 21st of August in Cologne. Alongside other Christian spiritual events, centered around Duesseldorf and down the Rhine to Bonn, there are concerts and festivals for the youth where they not only celebrate together, but also can get to know each other. In Duisburg as well, all young and the young-at-heart Christians are encouraged to participate in World Youth Day, under the motto "Meet the World - Gaeste sind ein Segen (Guests are a Blessing)."
To start off, a service will take place on Wednesday, at which the guests and the many hosts can welcome in World Youth Day (St. Joseph, Duisburg-Wedau). Under the title "Under Construction - Bau mit einer gerechten Welt (Help Build a World in Justice)" on Friday, participants will be involved in various social projects. Those who take part should start that morning at the international breakfast in the fields between Muedelheim and Serm, to strengthen themselves for the vigourous day. The day will conclude with an evening of encounter, in which the youth from around the world gather at the Duisburg Inner Harbour and enjoy the sounds of Do Not Feed, Remedy and Trustgame. Kai Magnus Sting and Chris the Magician will provide more entertainment.
The Saturday events will take place completely under the motto "KUL Tour" - the Scenery Park Duisburg-Nord will be devoted to the young and young-at-heart Christians, and where, along with the attractions of the LaPaNo, a musical and artistic programme will be offered. In addition, you will have the opportunity to take advantage of a guided tour around the Inner Harbour. In the evening, you will have to decide whether you would like to join the Pathfinder "Meet the World" Summerfest with Duisburg-based bands at the St. Franziskus Catholic Parish in Duisburg-Grossenbaum or enjoy the international music of "Tatort live" at the St. Hubertus Parish.
